How to Disable Protected View in MS Office 2010 And Edit Documents

google chrome add ons

Sometimes you receive an error message showing, “Protected View Editing this file type is not allowed due to your policy settings. Click here for more details.” This is damn annoying. I just got an email from someone with a Word attachment which I wanted to print. But MS Word wouldn’t allow me to do anything with the document, but show this error message. You can solve this by following the steps below.

Error message appears in MS Word 2010:

The following solution also work for other error messages when you try to open a file, such as:

“You are attempting to open a file that is blocked by your registry policy setting.” or

“You are attampting to open a file type <<name of file type>> that has been blocked by your File Block settings in the Trust Center.”  or

“You are attempting to open a file that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Office. This file type is blocked from opening in this version by your registry policy setting.”

Sometimes in MS Office 2010, blocked files may be opened in Protected View (as shown in screenshot above).

Solution:

Step 1: Close the document you just opened where you got the error message and open the program (for e.g. if the document was a MS Word document, open MS Word as you would do to create a new document).

Step 2: Click on File >> Options >> Trust Center >> Trust Center Settings >> File Block Settings and untick as highlighted in the screnshot below.

Step 3: Click OK twice and Close the program.
